This weekend sees the return of Europe`s most popular street carnival, but if you haven`t been before then the event can be a bit daunting. However, follow these tips and you`ll be absolutely fine
Ditch the tube map
During the carnival some tube stations are shut to avoid congestion. Your best bet is to take to the streets of West London and just walk, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the bustling atmosphere around you.
Leave your heels at home
It goes without saying but comfortable footwear is absolutely essential, especially as you`ll be walking around on your feet all day. Think about some trainers or boots, that way you`ll be sure to avoid the pain!
Fill a bag with carnival essentials
Taking a backpack is a great idea as you can fill it with carnival supplies. Bottles of water, snacks, tissues, sun cream, spare change, sunglasses — you`ll be surprised at how much you will actually need.
Fun for the whole family
Notting Hill has a bit of a family un-friendly stigma attached to it, however this is totally false. It`s a great place to go as a family, especially if you stick to the main viewing areas and are out during the day. Obviously the party vibe goes up a notch (or several) after dark, but that just means you take the kiddies home!
Find a good spot
Like any big event your best bet is to get there early and pitch up your spot. You don`t want to be battling the crowds once the carnival is in full swing, so take some time to ensure that you`re organised and in your spot well in advance.
You`re going to be surrounded by the delicious, mouth-watering smells of barbecued meats, jerk chicken, and seafood so you would be a fool not to jump in. Avoid the big chain restaurants that you would normally visit and eat at a food truck instead, you won`t regret it.
As with any big London event, your safety is paramount to the organisers. Make sure you pay attention to the safety advice as it`s only there to help you.
Perhaps the most important tip of all is to have fun. Carnival is the perfect time to let your hair down and soak up the tropical atmosphere, how many other times of the year can we get away with saying that!
